Restaurant Review: The Spot, Indianapolis, Indiana

We stopped at The Spot (6155 E 86th St.) last week, just after Uruguay won their quarter-final World Cup game against Ghana. We happened to be in the area and happened to be in the mood to celebrate, as Leo's phone was wild with incoming texts and phone calls from family and friends calling to share the news and elation.

Initially, we planned just to have a drink to celebrate, but then decided to order a little food. The bartender was a nice guy, but a bit too far on the overly friendly side, though he made a pretty decent drink. Leo enjoyed his whiskey and Coke and I let the bartender surprise me with what turned out to be a slightly-too-sweet-and-sour-but-still-quite-yummy Baltimore Zoo.

The appetizer sampled included mozzarella sticks, fried mushrooms, and jalapeno poppers. All were delicious but the last, and only when dipped in ranch dressing, as the "marinara sauce" they brought to accompany the cheese sticks was really more like tomato paste, which is far too acidic to be pleasant to any palate.

Unfortunately, this tomato paste was also used as the sauce on the pizza we ordered. It was a real shame, too, since the crust was quite nice, and the veggies and cheese were pleasant as well, though Leo felt (and I agree) that they'd been a bit too liberal with the dried basil.

And even though I opted not to visit the ladies room because it just seemed like the kind of place that wouldn't have a clean bathroom, the biggest beef I had with this place was that, when the bartender asked me if I wanted another drink and I declined, he said, "Quitter." Taken aback by the peer pressure attitude (Really? What are we, in high school?) I replied, "No. Driver." But that's exactly the kind of place this is. It's not a place for dining, it's not a place to order wine. Bottom line, The Spot is where you go when you want to relive your college "glory days," chug a beer, and get your picture on the wall for spending over $100.
